What is Wee-ya Win-na?

The Wee-ya Win-na is a community led group, made up of local Aboriginal community members that aims to support Aboriginal families within Newcastle and Hunter to identify and prevent any potential child protection risks to children and youth.

It is an opportunity to seek community support before things escalate. It will provide a culturally safe space for families to come and share their story with Aboriginal community members/Elders and seek support options.

Wee-Ya Win-Na will be facilitated once a fortnight to begin, being held in different community places.

There will be no judgement – only support, and you can easily refer yourself.

What can Wee-ya Win-na do for me and my Family?

Wee-ya Win-na will allow you to choose what services are best placed to provide you and your family with support. It will reduce the need to repeat your story to different providers and can link you into support from services that your family may need.

Who is part of Wee-ya Win-na?

There is a panel of up to three (3) Aboriginal Community Representatives from Newcastle and The Hunter Valley Communities, this will ensure that each fortnight Wee-ya Win-na Panel is run the same way and families all receive the same level of support.

Once we have received the referral, we will contact the family and discuss what will happen at the panel. If the family wants to participate in the panel, we will allocate and provide details for the family to attend the panel.

Referrals:

  • Any Aboriginal person can directly refer themselves to the panel. If you think you and your family may need extra support, the panel can work with you to identify the best support for you and your family.

  • An organisation can refer a family that may require additional support.

  • A community member may recognise that someone in the community needs extra support and can make a referral to the panel.

There are many ways a family can be referred to Wee-Ya Win-Na; however, the person/family must have the final say if they want to attend the panel.
