The Family Preservation Program commenced in 2019 and provides support to Aboriginal families in the Cessnock, Maitland, and Muswellbrook areas. The Family Preservation program comes under the Permanency Support Program to provide more intense support to families in New South Wales.
This is a similar program to the Intense Family Preservation program, however, the length of time spent supporting a family can be up to 2 years.
Both programs offer after-hours on-call support and are designed to keep families together safely and have a focus on the safety, welfare, and wellbeing of the child and/or young children, in a culturally appropriate environment.
Referrals are accepted only from the Department of Communities and Justice for families who as Aboriginal and if there are any identified risks to Children and Young People.
The Family Preservation program can support a family for up to 2 years, working with the families to assist in the reduction of the risk to Children and Young people who live in the home.
A Family Action Plan is developed with the families that identify areas of support that the family may require and that will also reduce the risk for the Children and Young People.
The Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) will reassess the risk every 90 days to determine if the stressors in the family’s lives have been reduced.
If needed, our caseworker may identify services available to provide ongoing support for families towards the end of the program.
